Mom's Homemade Soup

Ingredients:
  • 1 beef soup bone
  • 1 onion -- cut in 1 inch pieces
  • 2 rutabaga -- cut in 1 inch pieces
  • 4 potato -- cut in 1 inch pieces
  • 4 carrot -- cut in 1 inch pieces
  • 4 stalks  celery -- cut in 1 inch pieces
  • 1/4 teaspoon  salt
  • 1-1/2 cups  flour
  • 1 teaspoon  baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon  salt
  • 2/3 cup  milk
  • 1 egg

Rinse soup bone with warm water.   Cook 3-4 hours in large kettle filled 3/4 full of water (plus 1/2 tsp. salt).  Add water occasionally, as needed.   Add the vegetables and 1/4 tsp. salt.  Cook 1/2 hour more.

For dumplings: In medium bowl, mix flour, baking powder, 1/2 tsp. salt, milk and egg. Drop by teaspoonfuls into soup.  Cover and cook 10 minutes.  Remove cover and cook 10 minutes more.
